Air France and Turkish Airlines are two of the biggest names in aviation, and both run extensive networks with modern fleets behind them.

Air France is centered on Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in Paris, with a secondary hub at Orly (ORY). From there, it connects to close to 170 destinations across 73 countries, spanning Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, with a fleet of a little over 220 aircraft.

Turkish Airlines runs an even bigger operation. With its main hub at Istanbul Airport (IST) and a strong secondary presence at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), it flies to more than 350 destinations across upwards of 130 countries, more countries than any other airline in the world. Its fleet has grown fast too, now sitting at well over 500 aircraft across Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer, including modern A350s and 787 Dreamliners.

Baggage and Fees

Most people compare airlines based on baggage allowance. We did too, and it's genuinely a tie.

Air France. Your carry-on allowance depends on your cabin: one cabin bag plus a personal item, combined weight capped at 12kg in Economy and Premium Economy, or 18kg in Business and La Première (which also lets you bring two cabin bags instead of one). For checked bags, it comes down to your fare and cabin: Economy usually includes one 23kg bag, Premium Economy gets two, and Business and La Première get two to three bags at up to 32kg each. Just watch for Economy Light fares, since those often skip the free checked bag entirely.

Extra Fees. Overweight or oversized bag fees vary by route, and low-cost fares can also charge for any checked bag at all. Buying extra baggage online ahead of time is reliably cheaper than paying at the airport.

Turkish Airlines. Economy gets one 8kg cabin bag plus a personal item; Business gets two 8kg cabin bags (16kg total) plus a personal item. Checked baggage depends on the route: domestic flights run 15 to 25kg depending on fare, while international routes split into two systems. On "piece concept" routes, Economy typically gets one or two 23kg bags and Business gets two 32kg bags. On "weight concept" routes, Economy gets a straight 30kg allowance and Business gets 40kg.

Extra Fees. Fees for excess baggage vary by route and by which system applies, and Turkish Airlines lets you pre-purchase extra baggage at a discount before you fly.

In-flight Experience

Hard to decide — a tie?

Air France offers ergonomic seats across every cabin, including lie-flat seats in Business and First. On WiFi, the airline is mid-rollout: roughly 40% of the fleet has it as of early 2026, with a goal of covering nearly the whole fleet by the end of the year. Where it's available, you can pick from three internet packages, and every flight offers on-demand entertainment with a mix of mainstream and French cinema.

Cuisine: Air France leans into French gourmet dining, even in Economy, with wine and champagne on the menu and dishes developed by rotating Michelin-starred chefs.

Turkish Airlines provides spacious seats in both of its cabins (Economy and Business — there's no Premium Economy or First Class). Business Class includes lie-flat seats with direct aisle access on most long-haul aircraft, and the airline's "Planet" entertainment system is genuinely well-regarded, with a deep library of movies, shows, music, and games in multiple languages. Like Air France, WiFi is available on many flights.

Cuisine: Turkish Airlines consistently ranks among the better in-flight dining experiences in the industry, serving Turkish and international dishes, with flying chefs preparing meals on board long-haul Business Class flights.

Both airlines deliver a strong in-flight experience, so it often comes down to taste. Air France leans into French elegance; Turkish Airlines blends modern comfort with Turkish hospitality.

Business Class

Air France wins

Step onto an Air France Business Class flight and you're greeted with a glass of champagne and the feel of French fine dining from the start. The airline rotates its menus through Michelin-starred chefs (Daniel Boulud, Dominique Crenn, Glenn Viel, and pastry chef Angelo Musa are among the current names) for a three-course meal, with pastries or egg dishes for breakfast and a self-serve snack station in between.

The seat itself has caught up to the food. Air France's newer 1-2-1 Business Class suites, with sliding privacy doors, are now standard on retrofitted 777-300ERs and new A350 deliveries, with the rollout on track to cover most of the long-haul fleet by the end of 2026. The amenity kit includes Clarins skincare and noise-canceling headphones, and you get a proper seat-to-bed setup and a solid entertainment screen once you're settled in.

Turkish Airlines, on the other hand, leans on strong service, well-regarded meals, and standout ground facilities. The onboard food sticks to Turkish culinary tradition, with a homestyle feel that's earned it a reputation as one of the better business class dining experiences around.

The real standout, though, is the lounge in Istanbul. It's still considered one of the best airport lounges in the world: chefs cooking in front of you, a genuinely luxurious atmosphere, and enough going on that it's worth arriving at the airport early just to spend time there.
