Excellent in terms of its facilities and location, but bad experience in terms of its breakfast. I went to its Le Mezz Bistro Bar, which provides a buffet-style breakfast. The menu says $24.5 per person, but it ended up charging me $32.5 per person. I understand that the tax and the service fee are included, but there is a $7 price difference, which is ridiculous. The number just doesn't add up. Finally, I realized that they had automatically added the tax fee and the gratuity fee for about 15%. I'm furious about the charge. First, the gratuity fee is charged automatically and even you can't refuse it. It is not even disclosed in their menu before you enter the restaurant. The waitress has kindly shown us that on their menu, it says that 'the service fee is not included.' I don't find this is a good excuse. Most restaurants would have the same notice on their menu, but they won't charge it automatically. As I take it, it just means that the food price doesn't include the service fee, but it still allows customers to adjust the tip based on the service they receive. But here, you can't decide how much you pay and whether you pay for the tip. Lastly, if the service were good, I would be happy to pay for it even though it was charged without notice. However, sadly, there was even no or rare service at all. The only service is that the waitress would collect your dishes once in a while (not in a timely manner). If I could choose, I might pay 10% for this but would not pay as high as 15%. I have inquired the waitress and the receptionist about the charge, and the only response is that this is their policy/custom/culture. Fair enough. The breakfast experience ruined my stay in this hotel, and I wouldn't come again. P.S. The options for the buffet are quite limited and not worth $24.5. If you are not in a hurry or not stuck in the building because of the bad weather like I am, you have better options nearby.

We stayed at Hotel Cantlie for the second time on this trip, the first time being a year ago in October 2022. We booked a five night stay.||Cantlie’s location is excellent. It is between Mont Royal and downtown, and the Peel metro station is minutes away. It is close to museums, restaurants, shopping, and an easy walk (or metro ride) to many other attractions in downtown Montreal.||We stayed in a one-bedroom suite with a kitchenette. The bed was comfortable, and the room had most of what we needed for our stay. Full size fridge and stove, toaster, kettle, coffee maker, etc., great for having breakfast in the room before heading out for the day.||Staff were friendly, and when we needed the tub drain unclogged on the first morning, the plumber arrived within minutes of our call. No issue with hot water, and the elevators were reasonably quick but small.||Noise within the hotel itself was pretty good (more below about outside noise). There was very loud noise from next door late one night (in that one case the walls seemed pretty thin!), but aside from that it was quiet.||The hotel itself is showing some wear and tear but not too bad. Our room had some dents and dings in the walls, runs in the carpet, a few stains on the walls and ceiling here and there, and an arm of the sofa was coming apart.||The biggest caution is the high rise being built behind this hotel. This is ongoing construction. We knew about this from our first stay in 2022 and had requested a front side room, both in the special requests when we booked on their website, and I also emailed the hotel a couple of weeks before our arrival. Unfortunately they did not honour this request for some unknown reason (they couldn’t explain to me why). It was a big letdown after driving twelve hours to Montreal.||The construction noise was less than in 2022, but still a problem starting at 6am every weekday - loud enough to wake us up. Our room windows were directly across from the building site.||I did email the hotel two weeks ago after our stay, asking if there was any way, in the future, to ensure our request for a front-facing room be honoured - what can we do as returning guests? Is there an additional fee we can pay to guarantee a front facing room? No reply as of this writing, which is very disappointing.||Our first stay in 2022 was much better, and when we return to Montreal next year (this is an annual trip for my wife and me), we will find another place to stay. It’s a shame because this hotel has a lot to offer and the location is excellent.
