Hilton Berlin: Still In Prime Form, And Takes Care Its Customers|| By Doug Krikorian| | Because I've been a regular patron of the Hilton Berlin since it opened at its current Mitte District location in 1990---in its pre-renovation iteration it had been a part of the East Germany (DDR) luxury Interhotel chain---it's not exactly startling that I have developed a passionate fondness for it.| As I've stated in previous reviews, this 601-room edifice situated in a prime spot across the street from the historic Gendarmenmarkt Square with its German and French Cathedrals and Konzerthaus (concert hall) and near such enticements as Museum Island and Checkpoint Charlie and Freidrichstrasse with its array of high-end stores and the Brandenburg Gate and the famous German Parliament building, The Reichstag, and even the last remaining block-long tattered fragment of the notorious Berlin Wall.| Well, I stayed once again at the Hilton Berlin this past December, and once again all my expectations were met from the moment I checked in as seamlessly as ever which is a testimony to the Hilton's award-winning Front Office Manager, Doreen Maurer, who continues to oversee perhaps the most efficient crew of hotel receptionists in Europe, if not the world.| And, oh, did it come to my badly needed rescue seven days later after my wife and I had checked out and were dropped off at the Brandenburg Airport when I made a startling discovery that caused me great agitation, an occurrence that I will explain in detail later in this piece..| As for the Hilton Berlin, you'd have thought we had hired a private maid because our room, as usual, was kept so pristine throughout our visit from those hardy souls who do the cleaning at the Hilton Berlin, with the spotless, fresh sheets and quilts and pillows in the comfortable king size bed resulting in a perfect symmetry for a tranquil evening of sleep.| And of course the Hilton Berlin breakfast buffet with a tasty collection of culinary goodies and various beverages---including champagne and Bloody Mary mix---was terrific in the first floor Restaurant Beletage and so was the Executive Lounge where the food is so exceptional that I'd estimate more than three-fourths of the nightly attendees eschew going to a restaurant and choose to eat their dinner and seep their drinks gratis in the expansive premises.| You can't blame them and, although I always sampled the delicious hors d'oeuvres and equally wonderful chicken wings---I nearly always wound up going to such German restaurants in the area as Maximilians, Lutter and Wegner, Borchardt, Augustiner, Aigner, etc.| I even tried the Hilton's Listo that is located in the middle of the picturesque lobby, and I had a Berliner Wagyu-Beef Dom Currywurst and my better half had a Salmon Burger. It turned out for us to be an exquisite dining experience and we wound up eating there twice.| Everything unfolded smoothly throughout our stay in Berlin with its renovated Zoo better than ever---and it long has been considered the top one in Europe---and with visits to the dazzling seven-story department store, KaDeWe, and the colorful Christmas Markets and the lengthy walks on the Unter der Linden on the way to the Brandenburg Gate and on the Kurfurstendamm, a broad, long, lively, crowded boulevard often called Berlin's Champs-Elysees that is lined with apparel shops, restaurants, hotels, apartments, condos and theatres and assorted other outlets. | But that would all change dramatically as soon as we departed our cab in front of the Brandenburg Airport to catch an Easy Jet flight to Paris. | As the cab pulled away that Friday morning on December 15, I suddenly realized I had my suitcase but had left my briefcase in the cab with my Apple I Pad, a sizable amount of Euros, several books and other valuable items inside it.| At least I thought I did, and I had a feeling of total helplessness until I thought of the possibility of maybe having left it in my hotel room.| I immediately called the Hilton Berlin, and the operator transferred me to the front desk where I spoke to an affable lady named Antonia Schaffrodt, who turned out to be the assistant front office manager.| I explained the situation, and she said she'd call housecleaning, and would let me know shortly if I had indeed left the briefcase in my room.| Less than 10 minutes later, she called to tell me in a cheerful voice my briefcase had been found in the room, and that one of the hotel's terrific concierges, a Mr. Rene Pfitzner, was having it shipped overnight to the hotel we were staying at in Paris.| ``It should be there by early Saturday afternoon,'' said Antonia Schaffrodt, happily.| And it was with everything intact. | As I've known for countless years, the Hilton Berlin takes compassionate care of its customers.

My wife and I stayed at the Hilton Berlin from Monday 27th November to Saturday 2nd December. Firstly, there were no issues with check-in, the gentleman who booked us in was really pleasant, I let my wife do this as she wanted to practice her German language skills, when she got a bit confused the gentleman spoke in English and said " it's OK I speak English" to the relief of my wife and both had a chuckle, Brilliant Service. The gentleman who cleaned our room was really good, he would always say if we needed anything to let him know, our thanks go out to him as well. The bar staff were very good and pleasant to deal with. Thank you to them. The gentleman on the concierge desk was really good, thank you to him. We left our bag in the holding room as we checked out at 11am and weren't getting picked untill 3pm, the older gentleman was funny and really good, thank you to them. The room itself was large enough for us, there was a wardrobe unit on the left as you enter the first door contains 2 shelves and the safe, I had to use bluetac to keep the safe door shut, we didn't set a lock on it as we didn't use it, there's a hairdryer in there as well. The second door contains the iron and ironing board, then there is the minibar, it is stocked but be careful as whatever u take out is automatically charged to the room. There a kettle with the normal tea's and coffee's but for staying for almost a week then 2 milk cartons aren't enough, I would suggest that there should be at least 12 milk cartons which does 6 cups and 12 coffee sachets. We went to Lidl's to get a jar of coffee and a bottle of milk. The room could do with a chest of drawers. The bed and pillows were comfy and clean. The TV remote control didn't work that great but but that wasn't really an issue, if it had been I would have asked for some new batteries. The shower room was small but it did the job, we had a walk in shower, no issues here, the door is narrow so if ur a large person or use walking sticks this might be an issue. Now the downside. There is no heating in the room, the radiator is under the window which doesn't work, I turned the heating dial on the radiator but there was no heat at all. No radiator should be placed under a window anyway and even if it did work once u draw the curtains all the radiator would do is heat the window, that needs to be moved to wall next to the bed so when it does work it then heats the room, when we first arrived i had to sleep in the robe and thermal socks cause the room was cold, there are other comments about the radiators so it looks as if there not taking the heating issue seriously and berlin got down as low as -7 overnight, im not saying that the hotel room being cool directly resulted in me getting the cold but it certainly wouldn't have helped. The bar prices are steep but this is where money is made however 28 euros for a large wine and 0.5L of beer is really steep, but if you dont want to spend it then don't drink it. Breakfast is a normal buffet breakfast, it's a free for all and not table service, lots of choices but the only criticism is that the eggs are bit yuk, the scrambled eggs seem as if there not cooked enough, the fried eggs still had the clear white egg on top, it's not hard to cook eggs, the bacon is cooked to a crisp, why??? And some of the coffee machines only give u half a cup of coffee. Overall, breakfast service could do better. There's a little shop near the lifts, not seen that before but a brilliant idea, it's self service. The hotel is 10mins from lidl 2 mins from the Stadtmitte underground taking you directly to Charlottenburg and Alexanderplaz without changing. 20 mins to brandenberg gate and the reichstag building. 10mins to checkpoint Charlie. Overall its a good hotel with good staff running a large hotel within a challenging environment. We will come back to Berlin and more than likely stay at the hilton again but not in the winter due to the heating issue.
