I stayed here 2 nights. Very authentic Onsen with real natural hot spring water from volcano. When you walk around the place, you can see natural hot water is flowing even surrounded by snow which is unbelievable scene for me. It’s very old, but clean, traditional and very well maintained. We were almost only foreigners in the entire place and there was only one staff who speaks English, so it was a bit challenging, but very interesting experience at the same time. Also, there are many native Japanese visitors who are regular customers for a long time. When I talked to them, they were really curious how we found this local onsen. Let me breakdown more. Onsen - amazing to take a hot bath with mountain view. There are 3~4 bath places and each one has different water temperature. Surprisingly, an old lady checks and keeps the temperature all day long, so when you go to same bath tomorrow, water temperature will be same. Never ever bring your silver accessories to the onsen. My wife’s silver rings turned black right away when she started bath. Just not wear any silver when you are here.

I’ve visited this place at least once a year on average since 2009 (except for the Covid years). Worried about not being able to speak Japanese? Kazu, the boss, speaks perfect English! He’s the seventh-generation of this family business, meaning he’s the freaking 七代目 (nanadaime) like Naruto! Nisshinkan provides the best escape from the concrete jungle that’s my hometown. Disconnect from modern society, soak in one of the many hot spring tubs, enjoy exploring the surrounding nature trails, gaze at the stars in the night sky, and ski/snowboard in winter! I enjoy winter here the most. Nothing beats seeing the snowcapped mountainous landscape from the outdoor bath. When I said disconnect, I really meant it. The place is up in the mountains! The nearest konbini is a 90-min drive away! Wifi coverage is slow and spotty. So don’t come here to do your work, scroll social media or answer emails! Just really disconnect and chill! I was introduced to Nisshinkan by a friend. I was pretty bothered by its remote location initially. But I had to come a second, third and subsequent times when I let go of my desire for modern creature comforts.
