Beach Home Kelaa Located in the deep north on the most North Easterly island of the Maldives, Beach Home Kelaa provides the perfect escape from every day life and the opportunity to experience the Maldives away from the central tourist areas. We visited at the beginning of October and encountered no other tourists though I am sure this would be a different story during high season. The property has 6 rooms, 3 standard on the ground floor and 3 larger deluxe rooms on the upper floor, 1 with a balcony. It has been lovingly built and designed by the owner Moosa, complete with a beautiful garden and a first floor terrace. As soon as we walked through the front door it felt as if he had opened his home to us. All the rooms are nicely furnished and decorated, have en suite bathrooms of a reasonable size with a powerful shower, toiletries and fluffy towels. The room is equipped with an AC and ceiling fan, mini fridge, safety deposit box, beach towels, TV and bottled water. Wifi is available and whilst it worked fine on the fist day the connection was slow on the second. Just one of the joys of island life! Coffee and tea are available to make as you need in the ground floor kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is also available to guests who may want to self cater which is not a common feature in guesthouse. All meals can be provided by the property or for a change of scenery meals can be taken at one of the 3 local cafes. Sosun Cafe recommended for evening tea! The beach which has a bikini designated area runs along the west side of the island and has sand as fine as talcum powder! However, for us the opportunity to explore is what we were there to do! We were fortunate to be able to borrow motor scooters from local friends which allowed us the chance to venture to the tip of the island, passing through palm groves, agricultural areas, mangroves and tropical forests. We located the British RAF staging post the transmission metal tower structure reaching up to the sky alongside the palm trees and experienced our first Maldivian mud bath - hilarious! Bicycles would most definitely be a worthwhile addition at the property as there is so much island to explore. It is easy and safe to wander around, watch sunset from the jetty or from the harbour, wander the village at the coolest times of the day observe local life. For the energetic test out the out-door gym and if a morning walk or run is your thing you have plenty of island to cover! The property also offers water-sports and a range of excursions starting from $30 per person for snorkeling. Currently there is not a dive operator on the island but can be arranged through a nearby resort - this will obviously have a price impact. The same goes if you are desperate for a beer a resort visit can be arranged, however, with only 5* resorts close at hand expect rates to be high. If you are considering staying at JA Manafaru or Island Hideaway Resorts, Kelaa makes for the perfect local experience.

We were on a girls trip to kelaa and stayed in this most hospitable guesthouse. We were just us 2 girls but we felt so safe and comfortable. Where to begin! The welcome at arrival was really warm. They gave us flowers and refreshing drinks. Kelaa is around 30 min from the airport island Hanimaadhoo. The guest house organised a smooth transfer for us to get to Kelaa. The guesthouse is a family style property where I think a whole family can enjoy with huge rooms and a lovely garden. The breakfast is filling and the best part is that they make to order depending on when you wake up. So we can sleep in if we wish to. As the chef was on holiday we ate out from a great restaurant recommended by Trevor the manager. They deliver to the guesthouse so there was a lot of pizza in bed for us. The absolute best part of the guesthouse was the owner Mr.Moosa. it was such a privilege to meet him and he made us feel so welcome. He personally took us to see the wetlands and mud baths and organised some local goodies for us to take home. He even called to check up on us when we were on the beach to see if we needed beach chairs. It was really sweet of him. Now the island itself is vast but easily accessible by bike or walking. Must check out Kandoofaa, the largest wetlands in Maldives and the natural mud bath as well. There is a lot of farming and banana plantations around so it interesting to check it out. The lagoon which is one of the largest in Maldives is pure turquoise blue as far as the eye can see and its deep enough for a good swim. The sand is so soft and ever so white. It is a literal untouched paradise. We even saw a dolphin in the lagoon!! There is water sports and excursions available through the guesthouse as well. Sunsets are so vivid in colours as well. I can't put into words what an amazing place Kelaa is and the hospitality of the guesthouse owner and managment made our trip so much more special. I can't wait to go again.
