Absolutely stunning hotel, food and staff. The setting is insanely beautiful and the design of the buildings blended into the landscape wonderfully. We had a very relaxing time. The only negative was that they insist on charging a $78 pp fee just to use the Sauna … a “cleansing ritual”. For a hotel of this caliber to insist on that was disappointing and unlike most of the other Auberge resorts we have visited. It was distasteful.

Three things are standouts: the architecture, the beach, and their amazing culture of service. |Their website photos don’t begin to do this place justice. It is architecturally spectacular, before you even get to the nature that surrounds it. It is beautifully lit and at night it is mesmerizing. The natural setting is also superb. The place is only a couple years old but it does not look at all as though it was clawed out of the mangrove trees - it fits right in. Their service is, across the board, over-the-top, from the doorman who is blowing on a conch shell as he greats your cab, through Andrea, who runs the front of the house, and her entire team, the guía assigned to attend to your every need (think butler - ours was Itzel - she was incredible), restaurant management (make it a point to meet Ruby the manager at Itzam, she’s great), Armando, who hands out free lattes every morning, ALL the staff at the restaurants (thanks, Jonni, American, Diedier, Damien and ALL the rest of you), Omar at Che Che made us the best margaritas we’d ever had, Gabby and Jesus took great, remarkably cheerful, care of us at El Changarro, their restaurant on the beach (which was remarkably good and reasonably priced), the list goes on and on. Housekeeping staff did a terrific job and were as welcoming as anyone on the property. On our way out we chose to wheel our own light suitcases and three separate eemployees who on their way to other responsibilities (none were bellmen0 stopped and all but insisted on taking our bags. Food was uniformly quite good - the Mexican breakfasts at Itzam were superb. The gym was large, well-equipped and spotless.|They meticulously maintain their large beach area and the adjacent swimming area in sharp contrast to those at an expensive new resort right next door (which appeared unswimmable). We swam nearly 100 yards off the beach - the water wasn’t very deep but it was crystal clear and we saw lots of starfish and other interesting fish. They provide free kayaks that are easily managed (see Julien at the beach shack); we wished we’d tried them out earlier in our trip. |Recommendations: (i) the 90 minute catamaran/snorkeling outing is a must. It leaves right from the beach and takes you out to the reef that is only a few hundred yards away but not a safe swim or kayak ride due to boat traffic, so you’re only on the boat about ten minutes each way. Joshua took us out and plopped in with us for a fun hour floating over a beautiful reef. Go as early as you can. Neighboring resorts were depositing throngs of tourists just as we were wrapping up. Worth every minute and every penny, (ii) we were carted gratis over to the huge new resort next door one night for dinner. It was nice to get off campus and it is a pretty amazing place to see. When you return you’ll be glad you are staying at Etereo as the tranquility envelops you, (iii) we enjoyed taking a short $30 cab ride into Playa del Carmen for a nice lunch at (translates to monkey cave).|Tips: you can’t bring too many 5, 10 , and 20 dollar bills. There is a 16% service charge, which is typical in the area but we tipped generously on top of that (they earn it) and but you’ll like havingcash available for incidental service. (This though we never once felt anyone had their hand out in terms of tip expectation)|We’ve stayed in lots of high end places in the area and have never been disappointed, but this is the first one we left knowing we will go back next year.
