This resort is trying to be an upgrade from the other Villa Group properties. However, they miss the mark just a bit. Of course, the grounds are beautiful and the rooms are brand new. There are a few very nice 5- star amenities like bidet toilet seats, an infinity pool, remote-controlled blinds and a beautiful lobby bar area. They also have a lazy river, however, in my humble opinion, that is not my idea of a 5- star resort amenity. Where they miss the mark is not having 5-star restaurants on the property, accompanied with 5-star service.The steak house is sub-par at best, as well as the deli food in the market. We have found other Villa Group property market deli's to have great food. The drinks were consistent in price but NOT in quality. The pool bar drinks were more like what you get on a booze cruise, not what you would expect from a 5-star resort. The food was also not consistent. The restaurant that was our favorite, La Taberna, served mushy prawns. This has to do with the vender not the chef. 5-star resorts should not skimp on quality venders. These prawns were not fresh and the vender left the heads on too long, creating the mushy texture.The pool decking is an imitation flagstone that is already disintegrating into a clay dust that, when wet, gets your feet dirty and orange along with your belongings. The service is very spotty with a few very good staff members. My biggest complaint is the pool staff. Not a 5-star group of servers. Where do many of us spend a bulk of our time?The beach/pool arrea, of course. That is where I would really appreciate 5-service. Not here.....you get the same as any other less expensive resort. We were there for a little over 2 weeks and did have 3 great servers in the pool area closest to the beach; Alma, Alexandro and Florentino. On the other hand, at El Patron restaurant, at 6pm one evening (they were not busy), the servers were very busy chatting and texting rather than checking on the needs of their guests. Ramiro, in particular, was not attentive AT ALL. The spa and workout area were both fabulous with great amenities. The bellman were all very good especially Heriberto. I am confident that they will correct many of these issues as they seem to be a company that cares. I await their improvements, but for now, I will go to one of the other properties.
