Stayed at the hotel for one week from Saturday 23rd to the 30th of December. Booked this hotel after many positive reviews and of course its location on the river. As I was travelling with my daughter, I booked a Royal Two Queens Room with River Views. The price was very reasonable when comparing other hotels located on the riverside.|Walked to the hotel after arriving on the train from O’Hare and walked into the lovely reception area to check in. No wait to check-in and the receptionist greeted and welcomed us to the hotel. Just note that there is an incidental charge (was aware of this when booking) to be paid but refunded when you check out. The reception area is cosy with tables and chairs and a lovely fireplace. There is also a small market area for some food and drink supplies. |Our room was located on the 29th floor and we proceed to one of the 4 elevators (never had to wait long to get one over our stay). There are 13 rooms per floor and we proceeded to our room, which was the highlight of our stay. Not only did we have a river view, we also had a city view as we were located on the corner of the building. We were blown away by the view from the room. |The room itself is large and roomy, consisting of two queen beds, with a drawer and lamp located between the two beds. The lamp has one plug point and two usb points. There is also an alarm clock on the drawer. The beds are super comfy with two pillows.|There are 3 coat hooks and a full size mirror as you enter the room. The bathroom is small but perfect for our needs. Hairdryer, vanity kits, soap and moisturiser provided. These is also a vanity mirror. There was no bath, but a lovely sized walk-in shower, with a Koehler rain-shower / handheld shower combination. Nice to see 16oz bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel provided. No issues encountered with water pressure. Plenty of face, hand and shower towels provided (These were changed daily by house keeping).|Beside the bathroom, there was a closet room, which had sufficient space to hang clothes with hangers provided. There were also two bathrobes, the room safe, and an iron and ironing board. Was able to place luggage in here, plus a storage shelf in there too. The thermostat for the room was located beside the door, and it was simple to use. Temperature settings from 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Opposite the beds was the large drawer which had the 65 inch Samsung TV on it The cabinet had 3 drawers in it . Besides that is where the mini fridge and the coffee machine were located. The fridge was a nice size and ample space to put bottles and cans in. There were two bottles of water provided daily. There is also supplies for the Keurig coffee machine. Ice bucket provided, with ice machines located on every evened numbered floor. |By the windows, is a tall stand light which overhangs a round bar table and one bar chair ( would be great to have a second chair) to marvel the views out the window. Never tired of the views from the room - could sit there day and night watching the world go by. Finally the Pom has 360 degree swivel chair which was really comfortable to chill out on. There was also a stand light with a built in shelf ideal for putting your drink on. |Of course being on holiday, we spent a lot of our time outside the hotel and you could not ask for a better location to both the north and south side of the river. Michigan Avenue is only one block away with plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel has its own restaurant - Hoyt. We eat there twice for lunch and the wings that we ate there were delicious. The hotel also has a gym (didn’t use but went to have a look and it was open 24 hours with plenty of gym equipment there. Please note there is no swimming pool located at this property. |So all in all we had a great time at this hotel and would absolutely recommend anybody to stay at this hotel and soak in the vibrancy of Chicago. Cannot wait to come back some stage in the future. I would also like to thank the hotel for the nice little Christmas stocking that was left at our room for Christmas Day.

This is prime real estate in downtown Chicago. In terms of location, you really are hard pressed to find a more optimal location, that is of course unless you travel 100 yards in any direction. For the price of $220, three adults and one child comfortably slept 22 floors above a very scenic Chicago River. If $300 comes easy to you, I would suggest staying elsewhere. My major issue with The Royal Sonesta is the parking. The night we stayed, the hotel’s parking lot was full and this was weeks before Xmas. The “concierge” suggested we park in one of the Self-Park locations which were conveniently blocks away. Mind you…it was windy and freezing during our stay. Unfortunately, Self-Park garages located within blocks of the hotel, were not user friendly and that is a review in itself. Suffice it to say, I spent nearly a hundred on parking alone (Atypical). There is a restaurant connected to the Sonesta, but again, unless money isn’t a concern, I would certainly venture elsewhere. The staff was friendly enough but the elevators were not. Utilizing the elevator comes with instructions. Something that shouldn’t really be an issue, but it was…. time and time again our room fab did not work with the elevator and it was extremely frustrating. I understand that hotels in major cities typically do cost somewhere between $150-$300, but for the issues we had for only a one-night stay, I can’t say we would ever revisit. Comps are certainly welcomed 🙂. Location =10 Comfort = 7 Affordability = 5 Amenities = 2 Cleanliness = 8 Staff = 8
