Business | Friends|On my second trip to New York, my prime selection was the Carlyle hotel. Location, view, rooms, service, concierge, food, staff, bar, restaurant.....in one single word: STUNNING. really no single remark to mention, apart my team full satisfaction. All my team had a great time all over the hotel. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at restaurant was pretty. Name it and hotel staff will make it happen, ask always for Elie KIK, Joel, Mustafa, Mehrsa, Léa & Ari. The Carlyle NY hotel staff are always smiling, always available, always friendly and especially highly professional.|Special recognition for the concierge team who their cooperation in arranging last minute private jet on a Friday evening......|On behalf of us all, many thanks to Hotel Staff, management and managers for making our journey so enjoyable.|KEEP SHINE - WE WILL RETURN AGAIN & AGAIN FOR SURE|Natalia

You don't expect to get poor service, all your food cooked incorrectly, and vague racism at a place like the Carlyle, but that's what happened. Such a strange night. ||||Just the facts, no opinions here: ||- Asked for medium rare salmon, got well done, no pink; asked for medium lamb, got rare, fully red. That's $95 right there, done wrong. Salmon wasn't hot when served. ||- When we were sat, 30 min before anyone came to take a drink order, even though there were 7 of them walking around this small dining room in their suits, with only about 7 tables to serve. While we saw with nothing but menus, one of the men chatted that entire time with a tall blonde who was eating alone. During the whole night, no-one ever even said they'll be our waiter: the person who did wait on us said "I'm *above* the waiters, I'm the *captain*". ||- Ordered flat bottled water, they poured sparkling. ||- Waiter saw my emptied plate and said "I see you enjoyed the salmon!", so I had to tell him about the problems, he immediately went to the manager, she came over. I described the problems with the entrees and no-one coming to our table, showed a photo of my salmon that I took before finishing it, showed her an untouched cut of the lamb. ||- She apologised, took both our entrees off our bill.||- At the end of the night, we were told our entire bill was on the house. We had the salmon, lamb, bottled water, and 3 drinks from the bar (cocktails are $28 and up), that would be at least $175, though I never saw the bill. ||- I said to the waiter, "That's very gracious of you, thank you, I was a waiter for many years and I never saw that done for anyone". He replied "Yes, well, the woman seated behind me is the general manager for the *hotel*, and she saw the whole thing". I'm assuming "the whole thing" refers to me trying in vain to waive down a waiter to place an order, returning the sparkling for the flat, describing the problems to the manager, etc. She saw the entire team fail at every turn, from the smallest things to the largest, front of house to back of house. ||||So I was feeling like they had really addressed the issues, but that's when things got REALLY weird. The waiter, who was white (the entire staff was white), then randomly told us a very long weird story that inexplicably was about three unrelated people of color, two of those anecdotes being related to their sexuality. The monologue began with "I'm not a racist" -- it was inexplicable why he included that. "I had a roommate in college, she was a -- this is a weird word -- a *mulatto*, it means half black half white, she used to walk into the common area *topless* to get coffee in the morning... We never *asked* her to do that, she just did it... I used to have a coworker who was black -- *African American* -- I once said to her, we need to hire more black people, she laughed and said 'I *am* black' -- I'd forgotten she was black, ha ha ha... One of the lifeguards in college, I thought he was black, he had brown skin and the kinky hair, turned out he was Spanish, he was really buff, several girls would come talk to him at the same time while he was on duty". My gf and I aren't black and no-one ever mentioned anything about black people, so his long monologue about three people of color was mystifyingly out of the blue. ||||The website for the Carlyle says this: "Unparalleled among Upper East Side restaurants, The Carlyle's New York fine dining establishments set the bar for culinary artistry and flawless service." Tonight they were unparalleled only in that no other restaurant I've been to in my 23 years of living in Manhattan managed to fail in so many areas.
