Stayed here during CRSSD PROPER NYE! Checking into the hotel the valet was very helpful with getting my bags to the front for check in. Checking in felt a bit cold until the young lady checked me in. Due to her colleagues alluding they were business which they may have been. But from my perspective they did not. But the young lady of Asian decent was extremely helpful and check me into with the warmest energic check that I forgot about the heavier gentle man who seemed to be busy. After I checked in, I got to my room and immediately noticed the I was next to the elevator, which my Starwood, excuse Bonvoy. Until Marriott bought Starwood, I never experience issues during stays sadly. Anyway, my profile expressed I prefer not to be near the elevator but inside the room I could not hear the elevator. Which was quiet sound proof the walls were but the smell of mold knocked me on the ground as I entered the room (figuratively speaking) became worse as I reached the bathroom. Called down immediately and the at the time busy gentleman was apologetic informing me someone would be up with my bags to move me. After 30 minutes an extremely gracious and polite young man came up the elevator to the common space outside the rooms where I was waiting, could not bare that smell. Took me up two more floors. Extremely apologetic and polite with amazing energy to my new room which was closer to the elevator, nicer but same room type and felt a tish bigger but just as quiet. Helped me place my luggage while making conversation and was on his way. My stay from there was great, the hotel look just as pictures show exuding the scaffolding. Which is understanding due to construction and being from New York, Upkeep of an older build to look so grand can be hard. I came in for Proper NYE which every evening I was greeted by a young African American woman who had the best energy and welcoming attitude of them all. Even though I experienced some uptight smudge attitude, the three with this extremely beautiful proper gave it that 5 diamond service I expect every time as a "Bonvoy" member be check into a hotel and be treated. Silver, Gold, or Platinum as I expect not because that is how Starwood did it. But because this is the luxury collection and my first stay at one. I expect better next time. Probably the smuggest check-in (if that's a word) I have ever had in my 39 years of living and a hotel named after a fellow military officer who served his country. Thank you. I highly recommend this property, kid friendly, family orientated, possible great for weddings, just stunning. 10s a cross the board.

We stayed for 4 nights and got an incredible rate of $220/night all-in (including taxes, no parking). If we had paid more towards $300/night, I likely would’ve dropped my rating down to 3.5 stars simply because there aren’t enough amenities to justify the cost. The hotel itself is beautiful and historic. The lobby is stunning. However, the elevators, corridors, and rooms all seem a bit tired (many dents in hallways). I suppose this is to be expected for a historic property, it just seemed like it was lacking a little love. The service was the highlight. Everyone was extremely nice and polite. Every staff member we encountered provided a warm greeting. We ordered room service one day and it was excellent. We did not visit the hotel restaurant/bar directly. It seems like the location “peaked” several years ago though. Gaslamp seems more late-night, bar/party focused vs the other downtown areas (e.g., Little Italy or waterfront). The park across the street seems like it’s indefinitely closed? And the homeless people like to loiter around the streetcar station (adjacent to hotel), so anytime we walked towards Little Italy or the waterfront area, it was difficult to avoid them (and San Diego bums are more hostile than those I’ve encountered in other major cities, they will actually shout at you for no reason). The hotel also lacked what I consider basic 5-star amenities. No pool, no spa, no quick-grab food/coffee cafe. They do provide complimentary coffee in the lobby, but the only other food option is the formal restaurant. If we were to stay in San Diego again, I would opt for the Autograph Collection property closer to Little Italy. It seems a bit newer with more modern amenities. And most of our time was spent near Little Italy since that’s where the more interesting (and less party-ish) restaurants and bars were located. Overall, I’m not displeased with our stay. It was a lovely time at a very historic property, with great staff, for a great value. Sadly, I just don’t think I’d pick this hotel again mostly due to the location and surrounding area.
