CheapOair and RatePunk both end with you on a cheaper flight, and almost nothing in between is the same. CheapOair sells you the ticket. RatePunk tells you what locations are cheapest from your airport and leaves the buying to you.
Let’s look at what each does, what it costs, and where it stops working, so you can tell which one will help you book your next trip.
What Is CheapOair?
CheapOair is an online travel agency, owned by Fareportal, which also runs OneTravel. You search flights, hotels, and cars, you pay CheapOair rather than the airline, and CheapOair issues the ticket. That last part is the whole story: it becomes the company you deal with afterwards, not the airline.
- What you get - a booking site with a low fare calendar, multi-city and open-jaw itineraries most consumer sites cannot price, phone agents who can actually issue and change tickets around the clock, and the option to pay over three, six, or twelve months. Package bundles are where its savings are real.
- What it costs - a service fee on top of the fare, up to $50 a passenger on most tickets and up to $200 in business or first. Booking by phone costs from $15 to $250 in economy and up to $500 in a premium cabin, which is worth knowing given the phone-only deals it advertises.
- Where it stops - the fees appear at checkout rather than in the search results, and they continue after you book. Changing a ticket costs up to $200, or 15% of the fare on tickets over $1,000. Canceling beyond the first day costs $150 on a domestic ticket and $250 on an international one, on top of whatever the airline charges.
What Is RatePunk?
RatePunk is ours. It is a flight deals subscription: you pick the airport you fly out of rather than a destination, and we send you the cheap fares we find leaving from it. RatePunk does not sell tickets, so you book with the airline.
- What you get - deals from your home airport by email and push notification, across more than 100 destinations, each carrying a Deal Score out of 100 that weighs the price against what that route normally costs. If you already know where you are going, you can set a target price on that one route instead.
- What it costs - $24 for the first year, renewing at around $104. There is no free trial and the money-back guarantee runs 14 days. CheapOair is free to search and charges you at the end; RatePunk charges you at the start and adds nothing to the fare.
- Where it stops - RatePunk is no help if your dates and destination are already fixed, because a deal service finds cheap trips rather than cheap versions of your trip. It will not book anything, handle a change, or answer the phone when a flight is canceled. The recurring complaint on the basic membership is that some deals do not beat searching by hand.
Key Features Face-Off
Put side by side, the two barely overlap.
- Who picks the destination - on CheapOair you do, and it prices the trip you name. With RatePunk the price does, and you see wherever is cheapest from your airport that week.
- When you get an answer - CheapOair answers while you are searching and not after. RatePunk sends deals when they appear.
- Who holds your booking - CheapOair does, as the ticket agent. With RatePunk, the ticket is booked through the airline.
- What they cover - CheapOair sells flights, hotels, cars, and packages, and the packages are where its discounts are genuine. RatePunk covers flights only.
- Phone support - CheapOair has agents who can reissue a ticket at two in the morning, for a fee. RatePunk has no equivalent, because there is nothing to reissue.
Which Delivers Superior Savings?
The two savings figures cannot be lined up, because they are measured against different things.
CheapOair’s saving is against the published fare, and it is real on bundles and on complex international itineraries where negotiated fares undercut what an airline will sell you directly. Simple domestic round trips don’t have the same advantage on CheapOair: independent price tests repeatedly find CheapOair at or near the top of fares once the service fee lands, and its ClubMiles points are worth about half a cent each, which does not close the gap.
RatePunk savings are measured against what a route normally costs, which is a different baseline again. The trips on the RatePunk reviews page can provide examples of those savings: Thailand at $289 instead of $849, Hawaii at $230 instead of $600.
What can be compared is what each costs you before you have saved anything. CheapOair costs nothing to search and up to $50 a passenger at checkout. RatePunk costs $24 before you look at a single deal, and nothing after.
Ease of Use and Interface
CheapOair is a booking site and works like one: search, filter, choose, pay. The upsells are heavy, and the fee that changes the total appears on the last screen rather than in the results, so the number you compared is not the number you pay.
RatePunk has nothing to search. You set your home airport once and the deals arrive, which is easier if you have no destination in mind and useless if you do. Everything you need to act on is in the alert: the route, the dates, the price, and where to buy it.
Customer Feedback and Trust
CheapOair holds 4.1 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 36,000 reviews, and the average hides the shape: 70% of reviewers give five stars and 15% give one. The Better Business Bureau grades it A+ and records around 140 complaints in twelve months. That split is what a booking operation looks like when it works and when it does not, and the complaints are consistent about what goes wrong: fees at or after checkout, refunds taking months, and a price on the phone that is not the price on the site.
Fareportal (CheapOair’s holding company) has also settled twice with the New York Attorney General. In March 2022 it paid $2.6 million over what the office called deceptive marketing: fake scarcity messages, computer-generated popularity numbers, countdown timers, and misrepresented 24-hour cancellation terms. In May 2026 it paid $4.5 million to settle a tax case.
RatePunk holds 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 7,000 reviews. That rating covers a subscription rather than a booking operation, which is an easier thing to get right, and it is a tenth of the sample. What RatePunk does not have is a booking to go wrong, because we never take your money for a ticket.
Costs and Hidden Charges
This is where the two differ most, and it is not about hidden fees so much as about which day you pay them.
The part worth knowing before you book anything: US rules give you 24 hours to cancel a flight for a full refund, and they bind airlines rather than booking sites. Buy direct from the airline, seven or more days before departure, and that day is free. Buy the same ticket through CheapOair and canceling the next morning costs $75 a passenger on a domestic ticket and $100 on an international one. What CheapOair refunds inside 24 hours is its own service fee, not the ticket.
RatePunk’s cost is the subscription and nothing else. We are not in the transaction, so there is no service fee, no change fee, and no cancellation fee, and the 24-hour rule reaches you because you bought from the airline. The trade is that $24 is spent whether or not a deal you want ever turns up.
FAQ
Is RatePunk better than CheapOair for flight deals?
Neither is better in general, and they answer different questions. If you know the route and the dates, CheapOair will price it and sell you the ticket. If you have a budget and no destination, RatePunk will give you somewhere to go and CheapOair has nothing to offer.
How does RatePunk compare to CheapOair on hotels?
It does not. CheapOair sells hotels, cars, and packages, and its package bundles are the part of its business where the savings hold up. RatePunk is flights only.
What are the main drawbacks of CheapOair?
The service fee lands at checkout rather than in the search results, so the fare you compared is not the total you pay. Changes and cancellations carry a CheapOair charge on top of the airline’s. And because it is the ticket agent rather than the airline, the free 24-hour cancellation you would get booking direct does not apply.
Can RatePunk help with last-minute bookings?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Last-minute fares are part of what RatePunk covers, but a deal service finds what is cheap rather than what is cheap on the date you need. If you have to fly this weekend, you are searching, not waiting for an alert.
Why choose RatePunk over other deal finders?
Because it works from your airport rather than from a route, and because the ticket stays with the airline.
