Paying Less on British Airways: Sales & Avios

The sale calendar is the promo code

BA's discounts arrive as named sale windows, and two recur reliably:

• The January sale — which actually launches in mid-to-late December and runs into late January; it's BA's biggest fare event of the year.
• A late-summer/September sale — editions have run from late August through September in consecutive years (one is live as this is written).

Between those anchors, BA runs additional named events (spring sales, Black Friday). Practical consequence: if your trip can be booked in December–January or around September, you're buying in BA's discount windows — no code required, everything on ba.com's own sale page.

Who actually gets a discount

• UK military: 10% off via the Defence Discount Service (the official MoD scheme) — serving personnel, veterans, and partners, on BA flights excluding First. It needs DDS membership, and it's the single most under-mentioned BA discount.
• Students: BA itself has no student program — student fares on BA flights are sold by the reseller BYOjet for Students (the rebranded StudentUniverse). Those are third-party negotiated fares: sometimes good, but compare against BA's own sale prices before assuming.
• Seniors: nothing exists — and "BA senior discount, call this number" results are booking-scam bait.

Avios and Reward Flight Saver: the fixed-fee trick

BA's loyalty program is now The British Airways Club (renamed from the Executive Club in 2025; Avios remain the currency). The savings mechanism that matters here is Reward Flight Saver: redemptions with a fixed, capped cash fee instead of BA's notoriously high long-haul surcharges — now available across the whole network including long-haul cabins. The structural choice it creates: more Avios + small fixed fee versus fewer Avios + hundreds in surcharges. If you hold Avios (easy to earn via cards and partners), RFS is routinely the cheapest way onto BA long-haul.

When BA is cheapest

Fares we're tracking right now (updated August 2026): the curve slides downward through autumn — medians of $1,115 in October and $1,026 in November against $1,452 for August — and January outbound dates are currently the year's floor at $973. Autumn transatlantic plus the January sale is the value overlap.

The Basic-fare trap

BA's cheapest short-haul tickets are hand-baggage-only: full cabin bag and personal item included, but no checked bag, and seat selection costs money from booking until check-in opens (free allocation only at check-in). On long-haul, a Basic tier also exists with market-dependent bag rules — check the fare's inclusions on your specific route rather than assuming. The comparison habit that protects you: price BA Basic against KLM or Lufthansa with the bag you'll actually carry.
