Vietnam's shifting flight landscape
While Ho Chi Minh City acts as the high-volume budget anchor for Australian travellers, Vietnam's secondary airports and regional connections offer highly competitive alternative entry points that challenge the traditional single-gateway route. Across more than 1.7 million searches in our 21-month dataset, Vietnam has grown to command 3.6% of all Australian outbound flight searches. This demand is heavily concentrated, with Ho Chi Minh City capturing 57.2% of the market at a highly accessible median return fare of A$474.
However, Australia's extreme geographic isolation—reflected in a high isolation index of 0.90—usually forces travellers into long, expensive hub-and-spoke itineraries. Vietnam's aviation landscape breaks this pattern. Secondary gateways like Da Nang and Phu Quoc now offer direct or highly efficient single-transit connections. With a median fare of A$636 to Da Nang, travellers can bypass the southern hub entirely. This shift allows Australians to target regional destinations directly without paying a steep extra charge to backtrack.
The December peak and the May trough
The pricing curve for flights from Australia to Vietnam reveals a massive swing between the year's high and low points. The price index peaks at 185.1 in December before bottoming out at 60.7 in May. This extreme variance is not random. It is driven directly by Australian statutory leave patterns and school holiday structures.
With a standard 20 days of annual leave, Australian travellers heavily concentrate their long-haul trips around the Christmas shutdown period. This surge in demand creates a highly competitive seller's market in December and January.
What this means for your trip: if you fly during the December peak, you are paying more than three times the baseline fare of the May trough. The price drop-off in February is incredibly sharp, with the index falling to 85.2 as school terms resume.
Our recommendation is to bypass the summer peak entirely. If you have any flexibility with your annual leave, target May or August. These shoulder months offer the quietest airport experience and the lowest fares of the year, allowing you to bypass the high-volume holiday rush.

When to book and fly
Our flight-search records reveal a remarkably flat pricing structure across the week for travel from Australia to Vietnam, meaning travellers do not need to over-optimise their booking days. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive booking days is modest, spanning just A$26.
However, departure days show a clearer pattern. Mondays offer the lowest entry point with a median price of A$526, whereas departing on a Friday pushes the median to A$576. This A$50 price difference reflects the heavy concentration of leisure travellers looking to stretch their annual leave by flying right before the weekend.
What this means for your trip: if you are anchoring your holiday around Vietnam's budget-friendly southern hub or its rising regional gateways, you should aim for a mid-week or Monday departure. While booking on a Thursday technically offers the lowest booking median at A$534, the difference is too small to justify waiting for a specific day to purchase. Instead, focus on locking in a Monday departure to secure the price advantage.

Where in Vietnam to fly
Ho Chi Minh City anchors the Australian market, absorbing over 57% of all flight search volume as the primary entry point. This heavy concentration of low-cost carrier capacity keeps its median fare at A$474, establishing a highly competitive baseline. However, looking past this primary hub reveals a distinct regional price split.
Northern and central destinations like Hanoi and Da Nang command a clear price difference, with median prices sitting roughly A$160 to A$210 higher than the southern gateway. For travellers, this price gap represents a trade-off between a cheaper single-point entry and the convenience of flying directly into Vietnam's regional networks.

Ho Chi Minh City: the gravity well of Vietnamese aviation
Ho Chi Minh City functions as the heavy anchor for Australian travel to Vietnam, capturing 57.2% of all flight searches in our dataset. This massive concentration of volume is driven by an aggressive pricing floor: the median fare to Ho Chi Minh City sits at A$474, which is A$110 below the national median for Vietnam and a substantial A$213 cheaper than flying into Hanoi. This pricing gap is built into the route network rather than accidental, reflecting the intense low-cost carrier competition concentrated on the southern hub.
For travellers planning a multi-city itinerary, this price disparity translates into a clear routing strategy. Trying to book an open-jaw ticket that lands in Hanoi and departs Ho Chi Minh City often inflates the base airfare far beyond the cost of a domestic connection. Because the median fare to Hanoi is A$687, it is almost always more economical to book a return flight to Ho Chi Minh City and bridge the gap northwards using Vietnam’s highly competitive domestic aviation market.
We recommend using Ho Chi Minh City as your default entry and exit gateway, even if your primary interest lies in the north or the central coast. One likely explanation for the higher regional fares in Hanoi (A$960 average) and Da Nang (A$909 average) is the lower density of direct flights from Australia, which leaves those routes more vulnerable to higher pricing. By locking in the cheaper southern gateway, you can easily absorb the cost of a local domestic flight and still come out ahead.
The origin-hub price gap
Australian departure hubs reveal a stark geographic and competitive divide that challenges the standard east-coast flight path. While Sydney and Brisbane average A$774 and A$806 respectively, Melbourne and Perth emerge as the country's true budget gateways. Perth leads with a remarkable A$535 average return fare—driven by its physical proximity and aggressive low-cost carrier capacity—while Melbourne undercuts its eastern peers at A$742.
For travellers, this means the traditional default of flying out of Sydney or Brisbane carries a substantial extra charge. If you are based in Queensland or New South Wales, it is worth calculating whether a cheap domestic connection to Melbourne or even Perth offsets the price gap, especially for multi-week trips where the savings multiply. However, do not assume a Perth transit always makes sense for quick getaways; the extra travel time can easily erode the value of the cheaper ticket unless you plan to stop over.
Three bookings most travellers miss
- Brisbane to Buon Ma Thuot offers a significant price advantage, with a median fare of A$590 that sits 36.5% below the route baseline, proving that secondary agricultural hubs bypass the higher pricing of major Vietnamese gateways (n=548 searches).
- Brisbane to Chu Lai bypasses the high-volume coastal hubs entirely, yielding a median price of A$568—a 31.0% discount against the baseline that establishes this regional runway as a highly competitive entry point to central Vietnam (n=555 searches).
- Brisbane to Đồng Hới provides an alternative northern gateway with a median fare of A$660 (28.1% below baseline), demonstrating that travellers can access regional destinations directly without paying a transit extra charge at major hubs (n=1326 searches).
- Perth to Đồng Hới challenges the traditional single-gateway routing to Vietnam, offering direct regional access at a median price of A$584, which represents a 21.2% discount compared to standard baseline fares (n=531 searches).

Our data methodology
This analysis is based on anonymised economy-class fare searches from Ratepunk's flight-price dataset, drawing from a global sample of 40,688,214 searches across 22,792 routes. The search records were captured between 5 August 2025 and 7 May 2026 for departures scheduled from 5 August 2025 through to 30 April 2027. All pricing figures in this study are calculated in Australian Dollars (AUD).
To ensure an accurate representation of what travellers actually pay, our destination and city tables report both the average and the typical (median) price. Booking-lead times and weekday pricing figures are presented as medians to prevent unusual luxury bookings or last-minute spikes from distorting the trends. Seasonality charts are presented as an index where 100 represents the baseline annual average, showing the relative price swing of each month.
