The Most Family-Friendly Places to Stay in Formentera

1.Es Pujols

Es Pujols is Formentera's main tourist centre, nestled in a concentrated area with many shops, restaurants, and bars. It is also home to many tourist accommodation options, including family-friendly hotels and resorts, making it an ideal base for your holiday in Formentera. Thanks to Es Pujols' many facilities and modern conveniences, it has everything you need for a fun family holiday. 

Located along the northern section of Formentera, Es Pujols extends between the Estany Pudent Lake and a stunning cliff that takes you to the tower of Punta Prima. Aside from hiking, you can enjoy many other fun activities in Es Pujols. Be sure to visit the lovely market along its promenade. While it's smaller than the El Pilar de la Mola market, it's no less fascinating. Come here in the evening when the local vendors start setting up their stalls to sell everything, from souvenirs to local handicrafts.

As with most Formentera beaches, Es Pujols has a beautiful sandy beach with crystal-clear waters. The first stretch of beach you'll find in Es Pujols is the one that starts on the town's paved promenade. It's a lovely beach to swim at. However, it can get crowded, given the myriad of establishments here. Walk a few metres to avoid the crowd, and you'll find quieter spots to relax while the kids play in the sand.

2.Sant Francesc Xavier

As the capital of Formentera, Sant Francesc Xavier would make an ideal base for your family holiday to the Spanish island. It's the island's main town, offering everything you could ever want, from great restaurants to outstanding accommodations. Sant Francesc Xavier also offers a few attractions, giving you something to explore during your downtime.

One of the town's most significant landmarks is its parish church. You will also find the chapel of Sa Tanca Vella, which dates back to the 13th or 14th century. It has been restored and is open for visitors from Tuesday to Saturday. For a break between walking around, check out the town's fantastic selection of restaurants, where you can have lunch or dinner. Some have a menu for kids, so don't hesitate to ask. 

You will find more shops and restaurants along the side streets leading to the church square. Most offer excellent selections of souvenirs, handmade clothing, jewellery, and local arts and crafts. The town transforms into a vibrant atmosphere at night, with a few bars serving refreshing drinks. 

Among the things to look forward to during your stay in Sant Francesc Xavier are the local markets, especially at the weekend. You will find a morning craft market open daily at 10 a.m. and a flea market behind the church on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

3.La Savina 

Formentera, one of Spain's most frequented islands, has all the tourism amenities to make your trip with the family memorable and fun. There are many luxury family-friendly villas in Formentera, perfect for families looking for a spacious and comfortable place to stay here. Some of these villas are in La Savina, the port of Formentera and the only access point to the island.

Many visitors from the nearby Ibiza Island would come to Formentera on a day trip through the port of La Savina. You can take a boat from here if you're staying on the island and want to explore the other Balearic Islands. As the arrival point to the island, La Savina has many bars, shops, and restaurants. If you happen to be here in the summer, you can catch the night market along the port's waterfront.

You can reach the various areas of Formentera by taxi from the port. There is a tourist centre at the port and car rental offices if you prefer to rent a car.

4.Cala Saona

As the jewel of the west coast of Formentera, Cala Saona makes a fantastic base for your family holiday on the island. It's the only sandy beach sandwiched among the cliffs that occupy the island's southwestern section. 

In contrast to the other beaches on the island, Cala Saona is a little cove surrounded by cliffs that is ideal for families seeking a quiet spot to relax and play in the sand with their children.

Cala Saona is home to some lovely hotels, perfect for families who want easy access to the beach. When staying in this area, you'll spend most of your days relaxing at the sandy beach. The stunning stretch of coastline is vast, with plenty of spaces to work on your tan or play with your little ones. You can also enjoy some of the island's most beautiful sunsets here, so keep your eyes peeled on the sky as the sun hides behind the horizon.

5.Sant Ferran de Ses Roques

Sant Ferran is a quiet resort town in the centre of Formentera, where the roads from Es Pujols and Sant Francesc meet. Therefore, staying in Sant Ferran gives you easy access to the various areas on the island. 

During the seventies, Sant Ferran served as a meeting point for bohemians and hippies. Nowadays, the festive vibe is still there, as evident in its many arts and crafts markets. Aside from wandering around the markets, check out the Sant Ferran de Ses Roques church, dedicated to the patron saint of Formentera. 

If you and your kids are into hiking, hike up to the Punta Prima watchtower, one of the many watchtowers around the island. Some paths will take you to rugged cliffs, old windmills, and secluded bays.
