The Worst Airports (2026)

One of the primary reasons some airports gain a reputation for being the worst is due to their outdated and inadequate infrastructure: long lines, crowded terminals, insufficient seating, and subpar restroom facilities can lead to discomfort and frustration for passengers. Lack of proper signage, information, and directions can add to the confusion, making navigation within the airport a daunting task. But most of all, nothing tests a traveler's patience like frequent flight delays and sudden cancellations. Weather-related disruptions plague some airports, while others suffer from inefficient air traffic management systems or a lack of runway capacity. These delays can result in missed connections, lost baggage, and considerable inconvenience for passengers. And we all HATE IT!

Every summer brings a fresh round of travel headaches. This year, wildfire smoke has disrupted parts of Europe's flight network, and airlines worldwide are still catching up on the kind of investment their passenger numbers demand. Some airports handle the pressure better than others — and some really don't.

The Worst Airports in 2026

To shed light on the matter, AirHelp, a passenger rights company, released its 2026 AirHelp Score, ranking 279 airports across 76 countries. The ranking is based on flight data from May 2025 through April 2026, covering on-time performance, passenger experience, and facilities and comfort, with punctuality carrying the most weight.

Unlike past years, the top of this list isn't dominated by Europe. Vietnam has three airports in the worst 10, a sign of how fast the country's tourism boom has outpaced its airport infrastructure. Pakistan has two. The rest of the list spans the Caribbean, Greece, Portugal, and Egypt.

Here are the 10 lowest-ranked airports in this year's AirHelp Score, from least bad to worst:

1. Barbados Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), Barbados — 67% of flights on time
2. Rhodes Diagoras Airport (RHO), Greece — 65% of flights on time
3. Da Nang Airport (DAD), Vietnam — 60% of flights on time
4. Hanoi Nội Bài International Airport (HAN), Vietnam
5. Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), Portugal — 63% of flights on time
6. Islamabad International Airport (ISB), Pakistan
7. Hurghada International Airport (HRG), Egypt
8. Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN), Vietnam — 57% of flights on time
9. Lahore Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE), Pakistan — around 30% of flights delayed, 10% canceled
10. Tunis Carthage Airport (TUN), Tunisia — 53% of flights on time, the lowest score in this year's ranking and the third year running it's finished last

Lisbon deserves a special mention for European travelers: it's the only major European hub on this year's list, and it's the worst-ranked airport on the continent. Its terminal has simply grown busier faster than its infrastructure has kept up, and plans for a new Lisbon airport have been under discussion for years without breaking ground.

I’ll share my recommendations to prevent travel meltdowns. Nevertheless, some unexpected situations may occur, but so far, these tactics work: book early morning flights, travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and choose direct flights.

 Early morning flights are less susceptible to delays, as airlines are more likely to adhere to their schedules during these hours. This sets the tone for a seamless and stress-free start to your travel adventure. Opt for midweek days like Tuesdays and Wednesdays to avoid the rush and crowds that typically accompany weekends. These less busy days often offer more affordable ticket prices and fewer airport hassles, contributing to a more enjoyable trip. Finally, direct flights eliminate the risk of missed connections, lost baggage, and unnecessary delays.
