Looking to cut what you spend on flights with a single pass? Follow this guide to work out whether a flight pass would pay for itself on the trips you actually take.
The math isn't as simple as the ads make it look. Every flight on a pass still comes with taxes and fees, some routes are so cheap the pass barely helps, and others cover it in a trip or two. We ran the pass prices against real Frontier fares from RatePunk's data, route by route, so you can see where you'd land.
Flight Pass Options
Frontier's GoWild is the only unlimited flight pass a U.S. airline sells right now. The other airlines that come close either cap how many trips you get or sell perks like lounge access instead of flights.
Here's what each airline actually offers:
- Frontier GoWild: $249 for the Fall & Winter pass, or $599 for the annual pass at its regular price. After that, each flight costs $0.01 plus taxes and fees, as often as you like, on Frontier flights only
- Alaska Airlines Flight Pass: $69 a month for six round trips a year, or $129 a month for 12 with their Flight Pass Plus. It covers nonstop routes within California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, and it's not unlimited. You sign up for 12 months and can't cancel early, so the pass costs $828 or $1,548 a year
- Delta: no flight pass. The closest thing is a Sky Club membership, which gets you into Delta's airport lounges. Only Medallion members can buy one
- United: subscriptions for lounges, extra legroom, and Wi-Fi, but no flight pass
- Southwest: the Companion Pass, which you earn, not buy. It lets one person fly with you free of airline charges, but you still pay for your own seat
- American: the AirPass, a prepaid flying membership that grew out of its old AAirpass, closed to new members in 2022
- JetBlue: Points On Repeat, a monthly subscription that sells TrueBlue points you can spend on award flights. There's also a credit card companion pass that covers a second person's base fare. Its All-You-Can-Jet pass only ran in 2009 and 2010
- Air Canada: Flight Passes you buy up front, with 6 to 200 one-way credits or unlimited options, priced in Canadian dollars and sold only to Canadian residents who are Aeroplan members
- Volaris: an Annual Pass for about $600 that covers flights on more than 190 direct routes in Mexico, the U.S., and Central and South America. You still pay airport fees and taxes
So if you want to fly as much as you like around the U.S., GoWild is the one to look at. Now let's see what it really costs.
Which airlines sell a flight pass. Frontier GoWild starts at $249, then costs 1 cent a flight plus taxes and fees, and the Volaris Annual Pass is about $600 a year plus taxes and fees. Alaska’s Flight Pass starts at $69 a month for six round trips a year in four Western states, and Air Canada sells prepaid flights to Canadian residents only. Delta has no flight pass, only lounge membership, United sells subscriptions for extras like Wi-Fi, and Southwest has a companion pass you earn, not buy. American’s old pass is closed to new members, and JetBlue sells a monthly points subscription.
Every Pass Flight Has Fees
No pass makes flying free. Every one of them still charges you something each time you fly, whether that's taxes, fees, or bags.
Here's what you still pay with each pass:
- Frontier GoWild: taxes and fees from $15 per nonstop flight (over $100 on some international ones), plus bags and seats, though Frontier Elite members get some of these free, depending on their tier
- Alaska Flight Pass: about $15 in taxes and fees each way, and a premium fare of $50 or more on some flights. Seat selection is free
- Volaris Annual Pass: airport fees and taxes, plus carry-on and checked bags
- Air Canada Flight Pass: a fee if you change or cancel, depending on your fare. Seat selection is free
- Southwest Companion Pass: taxes and fees from about $5 each way on your companion's ticket, on top of your own ticket
- JetBlue Companion Pass: taxes and fees on your companion's ticket, on top of your own ticket
A pass saves you the most if you tend to book at the last minute. A normal Frontier nonstop ticket for the next day usually costs about $210 one way. With GoWild, you'd pay only $0.01 plus taxes and fees on that same flight.
What you still pay with each flight pass, and what’s free. Frontier GoWild charges at least $15 in fees a flight, plus bags and seats, some of which are free for Frontier Elite members, depending on tier. The Alaska Flight Pass charges about $15 in fees each way and $50 or more on some flights, and seats are free. The Annual Pass from Volaris, a Mexican airline, charges fees and taxes, plus carry-on and checked bags. The Flight Pass from Air Canada, a Canadian airline, can charge change fees, and seats are free. The Southwest Companion Pass covers your companion’s fare, but you pay their taxes and fees. The JetBlue Companion Pass covers your companion’s base fare, but you pay their taxes and fees.
Booking Rules Differ by Pass
When you can book depends on the pass, so pick one that matches how you plan. GoWild and Volaris release pass seats only shortly before departure, so they suit last-minute trips. Alaska's Flight Pass is the opposite: you have to book at least two weeks ahead, which suits people who plan.
Here's when each pass lets you book:
- Frontier GoWild: domestic flights starting the day before departure and international flights 10 days before, or earlier on some flights for an extra Early Booking charge
- Volaris Annual Pass: domestic flights from 24 hours before departure, international flights from 3 days before
- Alaska Flight Pass: book at least 14 days and up to 90 days before your flight
- Air Canada Flight Pass: book any time up to 1 hour before a North American flight, or 2 hours before an international one
With GoWild and Volaris, pass seats are limited and nobody promises you one, not even for your flight home. So make sure you have a plan B and some room in your budget for a normal ticket.
GoWild, Volaris, Alaska, and Air Canada's single-traveler passes are also for one person only, so a family of four needs four passes.
Most GoWild bookings can't be refunded either, so only book a flight you know you'll take.
Blackouts Fall on Holidays
GoWild is the pass with blackout days, and they land on holidays and long weekends, when lots of people want to fly. Alaska's Flight Pass and the Southwest Companion Pass have no blackout dates, Volaris lets you fly on any date of the year as long as a pass seat is open, and Air Canada doesn't list any for its Flight Pass.
GoWild blocks out busy days around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year, plus most long weekends. You'll find the full list of dates in our GoWild pass guide.
Pricey Routes Make Passes Worth the Investment
A flight pass is worth it when the flights you take are expensive. On short, cheap routes, you need a lot of trips to make your money back.
Here's how many trips it takes to cover the $249 GoWild Fall & Winter pass or the $599 annual pass, after the taxes and fees you'd still pay:
| Trip | Usual normal fare | Trips to cover the $249 Fall & Winter pass | Trips to cover the $599 annual pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atlanta to Los Angeles, round trip a few weeks ahead | $300 | 0.9 | 2.2 |
| San Francisco to San Diego, round trip a few weeks ahead | $45 | 16.4 | 39.4 |
| Any Frontier nonstop, one way, bought the day before | $210 | 1.3 | 3.1 |
| Any Frontier nonstop, one way, bought two weeks or more ahead | $100 | 2.9 | 7.1 |
Alaska's Flight Pass is a harder sell. A pass round trip costs about $170 with taxes, while a normal round trip on Alaska's busiest West Coast routes usually costs about $115. San Francisco to Las Vegas was the one exception, where a normal ticket cost about $195, more than the pass.
Treat all of these as best-case numbers. They assume a pass seat is there when you want one, and with GoWild you'd still book the day before.
How to Know If a Pass Fits
The right pass depends on where you fly and how early you want to book. If none of them match how you travel, you're probably better off without one.
Here's who each pass suits:
- Frontier GoWild: you can leave on a day's notice, travel light, and live near a big Frontier airport like Denver, Orlando, Atlanta, Las Vegas, or Dallas
- Alaska Flight Pass: you fly around California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah a lot and like to plan your trips ahead
- Volaris Annual Pass: you fly within Mexico or between the U.S. and Mexico, often at short notice, with just a personal item
- Air Canada Flight Pass: you're a Canadian resident who flies the same zone again and again
- Southwest Companion Pass: you already fly Southwest a lot and usually travel with the same person
GoWild and Volaris are a poor fit if you travel as a family, need fixed dates, fly mostly around the holidays, or always check a bag. Alaska's pass suits planners, and the Southwest Companion Pass suits two people who fly together.
If you plan ahead or travel as a group, Frontier's Discount Den may suit you better. It's a fare club that costs $59.99 a year, plus a $50 fee to join, and gets you and up to 8 others lower fares with no blackout dates.
If a pass doesn't fit the way you travel, you can still save. Normal fares rise and fall, and buying when they dip can get you a good deal without any pass. RatePunk Flights helps with that by watching prices out of the airport you fly from and showing you when a route drops well below what it normally costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Delta have an unlimited flight pass?
No, Delta doesn't sell a flight pass or flight subscription. Its memberships are for Sky Club lounges, and you need Medallion status to buy the annual one. Delta has also stopped selling Sky Club single-visit passes and lifetime memberships.
Does United have an unlimited flight pass?
Nope. United's subscriptions get you lounge access, extra legroom, or Wi-Fi, but no flights. A United Club membership starts at $750 a year, and an Economy Plus subscription starts at $799.
Do Southwest, American, or JetBlue sell an all-you-can-fly pass?
Not right now. Southwest's Companion Pass is earned, not bought. From January 1, 2027, 75 qualifying one-way flights or 95,000 Tier Qualifying Points unlock three companion trips, and 100 flights or 140,000 points unlock unlimited ones.
Once you have it, one person flies with you free of airline charges, though they still pay taxes and fees from about $5 each way.
American closed its AirPass to new members in 2022, and JetBlue's All-You-Can-Jet pass only ran in 2009 and 2010.
Can you still buy a lifetime airline pass?
Not from a U.S. airline today. American's AirPass, which grew out of its old AAirpass, closed to new members in 2022. Press reports say United sold a lifetime pass to a New Jersey traveler back in 1990, who was still flying on it then, but United doesn't mention it anywhere on its own sites.
How We Got These Numbers
The pass prices and rules come from each airline's own website. The fares come from flight searches RatePunk tracked from the U.S., using the cheapest nonstop Frontier or Alaska fare on each route and day. The usual fare is the median, so half the fares were cheaper and half cost more. These are prices shown in searches, not prices people paid.
To see when a pass pays off, we compared its price with what each trip would save you: the usual fare minus the taxes and fees you'd still pay with the pass.
About RatePunk
Reading fares and understanding what makes them move is our area of expertise, and the prices in this article come from our own flight data. We run RatePunk Flights, a paid membership that watches prices out of the airport you fly from. When a route drops well below what it normally costs, the deal shows up in your app and on your dashboard, so you can book it wherever you like, with the airline itself or a travel site you already use.
